Samia' rajulain yathakallamaan.

He heard two men talking

Lam yalthafith Juhaa ilal-khalf.

Juha did not look back.

What will the thieves do?

Hal sa-yaqthulaani-hi summa yakhuzaani al-himaar?

Will they kill him and then take the ass?

Paragraph 2

Thazaahara Juhaa Bi-annahu athrash laa yasmau'.

Juha pretended that he was deaf.

He took to talking to himself loudly, then he took to singing, Juha gave the thieves the opportunity to steal the ass.

Baa'da qaleel, sha'ra Juhaa, anna ahadal-lissain yufikku miqwadal-himaari wa yadaa'hu fee raqbathihi, summa yaslimu al-himaara ilaa saabibihi.

Athma-anna Juhaa fil-madeenah.

He became relaxed in the city.

Lan yaqthulahu al-liss al-aan.

The thief will not kill him now.

Ilthafath Juhaa ilaal-khalf, shaahada miqwadal-himaar fee raqbathil-liss.

Juha turned to the back, saw the ass's leash in the thief's neck.

Qaala Juhaa: A-Insaan makaana himaar? Haazaa amrun ghareeb.

Juha said: Is it a human in place of a donkey ?! This is strange.

Anaa laa asdiqu! Aina zahaba himaari?

I do not believe! Where did my donkey go?

Paragraph 4

Farihal-lissu indamaa samia' kalaam Juhaa,wa zannahu ghabiyyan.

The thief rejoiced when he heard the words of Joha, and guessed he was stupid.

Qaalal-lissu: Lee qissathun ghareebathun yaa sayyadee.

The thief said: I have a strange story, sir.

Hal thasdiqu annanee kunthu insaanan misluka?

Can you believe that I was a man like you?

Summa thahawwalthu ilaa himaari.

Then I turned into a donkey.

Lam akun atheeu' ummi. Fa ghadibath alaii.

I did not obey my mother. She was angry with me.

Wa da-a'th an akoonu himaaran, fa-thahawwalthu ilaa himaar.

She cursed me to be a donkey, and I turned into a donkey.

Hazinthu summa tharakthul-baitha, wa kharajthu ilash-sahariy'.

I felt sorry and left the house and went out into the street.

Qaabilanee baa'dul-lisoos akhazoonee ilas-sooqi, wa-baaoonee hunaaka wa ishtharaithanee antha.

Some thieves came across me and took me to the market, they sold me there, and you bought me.

Paragraph 5

Khad-damthuka kaseeran, kunthu ahmiluka,wa ahmilu ashyaaika, min makaan ilaa makaan.

I served you so much, I carried you,and I carried your things, from place to place.

Samahthanee ummi baa'da zaalik.

My mother then forgave me.

Fathahawwalthu alyawma ilaa insaan wa antha thaqoodunee fis-sahraa.

I became a man today and you lead me in the desert.

Qaala Juhaa: Alhamdu lillah alaa salaamathik.

Juha said: Praise be to Allaah for your safety.

Laa thaghdab ummuka marrathan ukhraa, hath-thaa laa tha-tha-hawwalu ilaa himaar.

Do not get angry with your mother again, so she does not turn you into a donkey.

Farihal-lissu wa-zanna anna Juhaa ghabiyyun laa yafhamu shai-an.

The thief was over joyed, he thought that stupid Juha does not understand anything.

Paragraph 6

Baa'da ai-yaam zahaba Juhaa ilaa sooqil-madeenah, shaahada himaarahu hunaaka.

Days later Joha went to the city market, saw his donkey there.

Kaanal-lissaan yaa'ridaanihi lil baiy'.

The thieves were offering it for sale.

Ra-aa al-lissaan Juhaa.

The two thieves saw Juha.

Ikh-tha-faa ahadal-lissain, wa inthazaral-aakharu maa'l-himaari, iqtharaba Juhaa min al-himaar,

One of the thieves disappeared, and the other waited with the donkey as Juha approached the donkey,

He began to whisper in its ear: Have you upset your mother again, and turned into a donkey? People saw Juha, and said to him: How do you speak with the donkey, Juha?

Hal huwa yafhamu? Akhbara Juhaa bil qissah, fa khaafa al-lissu wa haraba, Akhaza Juhaa himaarahu wa a'ada ilaa baithihi sae'edan.
