Exercise 1:
Sentence by sentence how to read and translation: Paragraph 1
كان في مدينة بغداد خليفة عادل.
Kaana fee Madeenathu Baghdad Khaleefah Aadil.
In The city of Baghdad there was a just Calif.
كان ذلك الخليفة العادل يحب
شعبه ، ويعمل ليلا ونهارا من أجل سعادته، فهو يمر في المدينة
صباحا ومساء، يتفقد أحوال الناس بنفسه.
Kaana zaalika al-Khaleefah al-Aadil yuhibbu shaabahu, wa yaámalu Lailan wa nahaaran min ajli saádathnee, fahuwa yamurru fil Madeenah sabaahan wa masaa-an, yathafaq-qadu ahwaal an-naas bi-nafsihi.
This just caliph loved
his people, (he was) happy in working day and night, he passed through the city
Morning and evening, inspecting people's conditions personally.
ذات يوم مر الخليفة
في الشارع الرئيس في المدينة، فشاهد رجلا يجلس على جانب
الطريق ، وهو يتألم، وفي يده زجاجة بها بعض الدواء.
Zaatha yawmin marra al-Khaleefah fish-shaariy ar-raeesi fil Madeenah, fa shaahada rajulan yajlisu alaa jaanibith-thareeq, wa huwa yatha-allamu, wa fee yadihi zujaajah bihaa baádu ad-dawaa.
On that day the Caliph passed on the main street in the city, he saw a man sitting on one side of the road,(he was) in pain, and in his hand (he had) a bottle with some medicine.
Paragraph 2:
عندما عاد الخليفة إلى قصره، أخذ يفكر في ذلك الرجل المريض .
Paragraph 2:
Indamaa áada al-Khaleefah ilaa qasrihee, akhaza ufakkiru fee zaalikar-rajul al-mareed.
When the Caliph returned to his palace, he thought of that sick man.
قال الخليفة لنفسه، لابد أن يكون مثل هؤلاء المرضى تحت رعاية الطبيب
ولكن كيف؟
Qaala al-Khaleefah li-nafsihi, Laa-budda an yakoona misla haa-ulaai al-mardaa thahta riáayathi-th thabeeb , Walaakin Kaifa?
He(the Caliph) said to himself, such patients must be under the care of the doctor but how?
لم يكن الناس يعرفون المستشفيات في ذلك الوقت .
Lam yakoona an-naas yaárifoona al-musthashfiyaath fee zaalika Al-waqth.
People did not know hospitals at the time(in those days).
Paragraph 3:
جمع الخليفة وزارءه، وقال لهم: يصيب المرض بعض الناس ،
فيذهب بعضهم إلى الطيب، ويذهب الطبيب إلى بعضهم في بيته
ليعالجه.
Jamaá al-Khaleefah wuzaraa-ahoo wa qaala lahum: Yuseebu al-maradh baád an-naas fa yazhabu baáduhum ilaa ath-thabeeb, wa yazhabu ath-thabeeb ilaa baádihim fee baitihi li-yuaalijahu.
The Caliph gathered his ministers, and he said to them: The disease afflicts some people, some go to the doctor, and the doctor goes to some to treat them at home.
قال الوزراء: نعم، هذا ما يحدث.
Qaala al-wuzaraa: Na'am, haaza Maa yahdisu.
The ministers said: Yes, that's what happens.
قال الخليفة: بعض المرضى يحتاجون إلى رعاية الطبيب ليلا ونهارا، فماذا نفعل؟
Qaala al-Khaleefah: baádu al-mardaa yahthaajoona ilaa riáath-ath-thabeeb Lailan wa nahaaran, famaazaa nafálu?
The Caliph said: Some Patients need a doctor's care day and night, so what should we do?
قال أحد الؤزراء: نجعل الطيب يسكن مع المريض في منزله.
Qaala ahadu al-wuzaraa: Najálu ath-thabeebu yaskunu maá al-mareedi fee manzilihi.
One of the ministers said: We make the doctor live with the patient in his home.
قال الخليفة: لا نستطيع أن نعطي طبيبا لكل مريض، فليس عدنا أطباء كثيرون.
Qaala al-Khaleefah: Laa nasthateeu' an nuu'thiya thabeeban likulli mareed, falaisa indanaa athib-baau kaseeroon.
The Caliph said: We can not give a doctor to every patient, we do not have many doctors.
قال بعض الؤزراء: لماذا لا يمر الأطباء على المرضى في بيوتهم ليلا ونهارا؟
Qaala baa'du al-uzaraa: Limaazaa laa yamurru al-athibbaau alaa al-mardaa fee buyoothihim lailan wa nahaaran?
Some of the ministers said: Why don't(we ask) the doctors pass by their homes day and night?
أجاب الخليفة: المدينة واسعة، وفى هذا تعب للطيب، ثم قال: عندي فكرة، وهي أن نبني بيتا كبيرا وواسعا، تحيط به الأشجار والأزهار و فيه غرف كثيرة، يسكن فيها المرضي و الاطباء، ونضع فيه المعامل لصناعة الدواء.
Ajaaba al-khaleefah: Al-madeenah waasia'h, wa fee haazaa thaa'b lith-thabeeb, summa qaal: Indee fiqrah, wa hiya an nabniya baithan kabeeran wa waasia'n, thuheetha bihee al-ashjaar wal-azhaar wa feehi ghuraf kaseerah, yaskunu feehaa al-mardaa wal-athibbaa, wa nadau' feehi al-mua'amil lisinaa-a'thi ad-dawaa.
The Caliph replied: The city is wide, and it is tiring for the doctor, and then said: I have an idea, which is to build a large and spacious house, surrounded by trees and flowers, and in it are many rooms where the sick stay and so do the doctors, and we put in laboratories for the manufacture of medicines.
Paragraph 4 (Arabic transliteration pending):
طلب الخليفة من وُزَرَائِهِ أن يختاروا له طبيبا، ليشرف على المستشفى الكبير الذي يريد بَناءه في بغداد.
Thalaba al-Khaleefah min wuzaraaihee an yakhthaaroo lahoo thabeeban li-yashrifa alal-musthashfaa al-kabeer-il-lazee yureedu banaa-ahu fee Baghdad.The Caliph asked his ministers to choose him a doctor, to supervise the big hospital he wants to build in Baghdad.
اختار الؤزراء الطبيب الرازي، فأرسل اليه الخليفة، وعندما ذهب إليهِ قال له: أريد منك أن تختار لي مكانا مناسبا في بغداد، لأقيم فيه المستشفى الكبير الذي أريد بَناءه.
The ministers chose doctor Al-Razi, and then sent him to the Caliph, and when he went to him (Calif), the Calif said to him: I want you to choose a suitable place for me in Baghdad, where I would have a large hospital which I want to build.
Paragraph 5:(Work in Progress)
أخذ الرازي يفكر في طريقة يختار بها المكان المناسب.
بعد تفكير طويل ، اهتدى الرازي إلى فكرة، فطلب من أحد أولاده أن يذهب
إلى السوق، ويشتري قطعة كبيرة من اللحم الطازج.
Razi started thinking of a way to choose the right place. After thinking long, Razi turned to an idea, and asked one of his children to go to the market, buys a large piece of fresh meat.
عندما أحضرالولد قطعة اللحم جمع الأولاده، واخذ يقسّم قطعة اللحم إلى قطع صغيرة
ويعطي كل واحد منهم قطعة منها.
When the boy brought the piece of meat he gathered the children, and he took the piece of meat and made small pieces and gave each one of them a piece.
وضع الرازي خريطة بغداد أمام أولاده وحدد لكل
واحد منهم المكان الذي يذهب إليه، ليعلق فيه قطعة اللحم التي معه، ويحرسها ليل
نهار، وقال لهم إنه سيمر عليهم من وقت إلى آخر.
Razi put a Map of Baghdad in front of his children and specified each of them where he had to go, to hang the piece of meat with him, and guard it day and night. He told them he would pass by them at a later time.
Paragraph 6:(Work in Progress)
حمل كل ولد قطعة اللحم، وذهب إلى المكان الذي حدده له الرازي، وعلّق قطعة اللحم هناك، وجلس بالقرب منها يحرسها.Each child carried a piece of meat, and went to the place set by Al-Razi, and hung the piece of meat there, and sat next to it guarding it.
أخذ الرازي يمرّ على الأولاد في أماكنهم من وقت إلى آخر،
ليتحسس قطع اللحم، ويشمها ويكتب ملاحظاته فى ورق معه.
Al-Razi passed by the boys at their places from time to time, for feeling the pieces of flesh, and smelling it and writing remarks on a paper with him.
بعد أيام ذهب الرازي إلى قصر الخليفة وهناك وضع خريطة بغداد
أمام الخليفة، وأشار إلى المكان المناسب لبناء المستشفى.
A few days later, al-Razi went to the palace of the Caliph and there he laid the map of Baghdad in front of the Caliph, and he pointed out the right place to build the hospital.
سأل الخليفة الرازي: لماذا علقت قطع اللحم في أماكن مختلفة من
بغداد؟!The Caliph asked al-Razi: Why did he hang the meat pieces in different places of Baghdad?!
أجاب الرازي: أردت أن أعرف المكان المناسب صحيّا للمستشفى، فوضعت قطع اللحم في أماكن مختلفة، وقد اخترتالمكان الذي لم يتلف فيه اللحم بسرعة.
Al-Razi replied: "I wanted to know the right place for the hospital. So I put the meat pieces in different places, and I chose the place where the meat did not decay fast.
هذا أنسب الأماكن جوًّا لبناء المستشفى. This is the most suitable place to build a hospital.
أعجب الخليفة بذكاء الرازي، فاختاره مديرا للمستشفى
The Caliph was impressed by the intelligence of Al Razi and chose him as the director of the hospital.
بنى المستشفى في المكان الذي اختاره الرازي،وأحاط المهندسون والعمال المستشفى بالأشجار والأزهار وبنوا في داخله غرفا للمرضى، ومعامل للصيدلة، ومساكن للأطباء وأخذ المرضى يحضرون إلى الشتشفى من كل مكان،
وكان الأطباء يفحصونهم، ويصرفون لهم الدواء وإذا كانت حالة المريض سيّئَةً، يُعطيه الأطباء غرفة ليسكن فيها، ويقدمون له الطعام والدواء.
The hospital was built in the place Al-Raazi had chosen, the Engineers and the employees of the hospital planted trees and flowers and built in it rooms for the sick, laboratories for the pharmacy, and houses for doctors and Patients started coming to the hospital from everywhere and doctors examined them, they give them medication and if the patient's condition was bad, the doctors give him a room to stay in, and they give him food and medicine.
زار الخليفة المستشفى، ليتفقد أحوال المرضى، فشعر بالسعادة، وشكر الرازي، والأطباء، لأنّة وجد المستشفى نظيفا،
وشاهد المرضى يأكلون طعاما طيبا، ويتاولون دواءً مفيدًا
The Caliph visited the hospital, to inspect the conditions of patients, he thanked al-Raazi and the doctors, for he found the hospital clean and witnessed that the patients ate clean food and took useful medicines.
